About This Role

Design and develop curriculum for high school students in an Epidemiology major, focusing on mathematical problem-solving, reasoning, and modeling. This part-time role involves creating engaging course materials and capstone projects for students from low-income backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive roadmap for the Epidemiology major, including course sequence and detailed outlines
  • Design and draft capstone projects that align with the major's learning objectives
  • Develop all necessary course materials to ensure successful implementation by program instructors
  • Revise curriculum materials based on initial implementation feedback and instructor input
  • Directly teach each class during its initial launch phase
  • Observe other instructors teaching the class and debrief to gather feedback for materials improvement
  • Determine instructor hiring needs for the major and support the recruitment process
  • Provide guidance and support to instructors implementing the developed course material

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of mathematics at an advanced undergraduate or graduate level, including comfort with proofs and layered abstraction
  • Engagement with authentic work in mathematical biology (research or industry)
  • Knowledge of effective enrichment teaching practices, activities, and classroom approaches
  • Strong pedagogical skills for teaching high school students, including designing rigorous and engaging courses
  • Exceptional writing skills to create precise, engaging, and clear course materials and lesson plans
  • Ability to plan, track, and independently implement large projects on time
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • At least three years of teaching experience, preferably in contexts outside of the school curriculum
  • At least one prior experience creating a course independently rather than teaching from a prescribed curriculum

Qualifications

  • At least three years of teaching experience, preferably outside of traditional school curriculum, and prior experience creating a course independently.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in programs that promote educational equity or teaching historically marginalized students
  • Strong understanding of diverse student backgrounds and needs, and how to design supportive systems
  • Experience with educational enrichment programs in mathematics or mathematical biology
  • Experience supporting students in significant independent projects (e.g., research projects)
  • Experience with analyzing large data sets or mathematical modeling capstone projects
  • Experience writing curriculum for other instructors to use
  • Experience with STEM education and opportunities at the collegiate level or beyond
