About This Role

The Official Superior Court Reporter accurately reports and transcribes verbatim records of official court proceedings. This role requires preparing and certifying transcripts, reading records aloud in court, and potentially providing CART services for the hearing impaired.

Responsibilities

  • Report and transcribe verbatim records of official court proceedings using stenography or voice writing equipment.
  • Prepare and certify transcripts at the direction of the Court and in accordance with prescribed format and statute.
  • Read the record aloud in court to judges, counsel, witnesses, and jurors.
  • Provide CART services to assist the hearing impaired in ADA-related or other special cases.
  • Provide real-time reporting as directed by the Court Executive Officer.
  • Safely store and preserve notes, files, and records as official court documents.
  • Perform basic legal and office file research for appropriate case documentation.
  • Maintain records and prepare basic reports related to work performed.
  • Provide back-up reporter coverage for other judicial officers as directed.

Requirements

  • Certified by the State of California as a Certified Shorthand Reporter or Voice Writer
  • Knowledge of California statutes relating to court reporting services, CART and ADA
  • Knowledge of legal, medical and other technical terminology
  • Ability to take verbatim dictation of courtroom proceedings at a certified rate
  • Ability to promptly read back the record and prepare transcripts utilizing CAT software
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files
  • Ability to adapt to changing court reporting technology

  • Any combination of education, vocational training, or work experience which provides the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed.

Nice to Have

  • Ability to pass the Courts real-time proficiency test (for Court Reporter Real Time 3%)
  • Capability to provide CART services
