This role involves managing an institutional housing unit within a medium-custody or close-custody correctional facility. The manager works closely with programs and custody staff to coordinate services and oversee the programmatic and operational orientation of inmates.
Responsibilities
- Manage an institutional housing unit within a medium-custody or close-custody institution
- Work closely with programs and custody staff in the coordination of services
- Oversee the programmatic/operational orientation of inmates, including education, mental health, administrative and disciplinary restrictive housing, and work assignments
- Exercise overall accountability and responsibility for the housing unit (medium-custody)
- Approve unit classification and disciplinary committees (medium-custody)
- Supervise Correctional Housing Unit Manager I’s (medium-custody)
- Supervise Sergeants (close-custody)
Requirements
- High School or GED diploma
- 5 years of correctional experience
- 2 years of supervisory experience
- Eligibility for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission
- Thorough knowledge of discipline methods and procedures for inmates
- Thorough knowledge of programs/rehabilitation for inmates
- Thorough knowledge of supportive counseling and interviewing techniques
- Skill in supervisory and managerial techniques
- Ability to evaluate information concerning an individual’s past experience, training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities
- Ability to prepare reports, both written and oral
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with inmates, inmates' families, and professional personnel
Qualifications
- High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years of correctional experience, two of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
