The Code Enforcement Officer I/II inspects residential, commercial, industrial properties, and transient businesses for compliance with federal, state, and local codes, laws, regulations, and ordinances. This role involves initiating enforcement actions, issuing citations and notices, and maintaining comprehensive records.
Responsibilities
- Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial properties, and transient businesses for code compliance
- Determine existence and type of code violations, compile and evaluate findings
- Interpret, apply, and explain municipal codes, zoning ordinances, building codes, and safety codes to the public
- Maintain clear, concise, and comprehensive records and reports related to enforcement activities
- Gather evidence and prepare cases for court proceedings, including filing criminal complaints when necessary
- Respond to questions and concerns from the public, departmental staff, and other agencies
- Prepare a variety of reports and correspondence, including notices of violation and follow-up letters
- Establish positive working relationships with community organizations, agencies, and city staff
Requirements
- One year of code enforcement experience in building, business licensing, and construction
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class C California Driver's License
- Ability to obtain PC 832 and CACEO Basic Module certifications within one year of appointment
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One year of experience in the enforcement of codes in areas of building, business licensing, and construction. Two additional years of experience in municipal government code enforcement, building, business licensing, construction, or a related field are also required.
