Assist The Nature Conservancy's Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve team with marine habitat restoration, migratory bird stewardship, preserve management, and education/public outreach.
Responsibilities
- Assist with land and water-based marine habitat restoration activities, including maintaining an eelgrass seed curing facility and oyster reef construction
- Stewardship of beach nesting birds, including patrolling habitats, maintaining signage, and counting and identifying bird species
- Conduct public visitor outreach and surveys at boat ramps
- Assist with preserve management and maintenance, including trail maintenance and general facility upkeep
- Participate in education and outreach events
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 6 months of related experience
- Experience working in remote, outdoor settings in variable and physically challenging conditions
- Comfortable working on a boat (under supervision)
- Comfortable independently interacting with the public and representing TNC
- Meet all TNC Youth Qualification requirements and background check
- Valid driver's license
Qualifications
- High school diploma, or equivalent
- 6 months of related experience; designed for people early in their education or career with limited prior professional experience
Nice to Have
- Snorkelling experience or comfort with snorkelling in shallow water
- Knowledge of Eastern Shore communities or history
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
- Student interested in pursuing a career in conservation
