Camp Assistant

About This Role

This role involves creating engaging and safe environmental education experiences for campers aged 5-17 at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden. The Camp Assistant works with a Camp Lead to facilitate activities and foster an appreciation for wildlife and nature.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Camp Lead in teaching scripted, animal- and plant-oriented programs, including handling biofacts
• Prepare teaching aids and craft activities
• Complete associated preparatory and clean-up work
• Monitor campers for allergy, notification, and behavioral alerts
• Supervise and assist children for the duration of camp
• Interact appropriately with camp parents and zoo staff
• Provide a safe learning environment and follow all OKC policies and procedures
• Work closely with the Camp Lead to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment
• Serve as a positive role model for campers, encouraging teamwork, respect, and empathy
• Be flexible and adaptable to changes in schedule, activities, and camper needs
• Report concerns or issues to the Camp Lead and Program Supervisor
• Supervise lunchtime activities
• Work collaboratively with other camp staff members to ensure smooth operation

Requirements

• At least sixteen (16) years of age
• One month of experience working with children or equivalent
• Ability to pass pre-employment and/or periodic background checks and restricted registry checks

Qualifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred
• One month of experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience
