This role ensures the safety and integrity of buildings in Lancaster by reviewing plans, conducting inspections, and enforcing compliance with codes and ordinances. The official will work with developers, designers, and property owners to meet safety and regulatory standards, supporting the city's mission for a safe community.
Responsibilities
- Review building plans and related documents for compliance with applicable codes and ordinance requirements for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings
- Review and approve construction permit submittal documents
- Schedule and perform field inspections noting any violations of Codes or Ordinances as well as issuing permits for construction and/or demolition
- Assist developers, designers, and property owners with code-related problems, potential structure or building system hazards, and recommend abatement action
- Draft and mail notices of violation, citations, condemnations, demolitions, and abatement orders
- Maintain and submit records of field reports, inspection results, and plan reviews
- Collaborate with other City departments as necessary to achieve common goals
- Perform field inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects
- Interact with the public and explain technical information to both technically and non-technically trained individuals
- Maintain accurate records to document inspections, test results, and additional details pertaining to inspections
Requirements
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Ability to obtain additional commercial or residential ICC certifications within one year of hire date
- Ability to obtain five (5) ICC residential certifications within 12 months of employment
- Ability to obtain the Building Code Official certification within 18 months of employment
Qualifications
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or a related field preferred.
- No prior experience required.
