The Assistant Fire Chief supports the Fire Chief in managing all emergency and non-emergency activities of the Fire District, including planning, organizing, and directing activities across Fire Operations, Administration, and Prevention Divisions. This critical role involves commanding emergency incidents, personnel training, and acting as Fire Chief in their absence.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Fire Chief in managing emergency and non-emergency work activities and directing the Fire District
- Plan, organize, and direct activities of the Fire Operations, Administration, and Prevention Divisions
- Command emergency incidents and oversee fire suppression, investigations, and prevention
- Conduct personnel training and manage customer service and public relations events
- Serve as Fire Chief in the absence of the Chief
- Provide highly complex staff assistance to the Fire Chief
- Represent and support the Mission, Vision, and Values of the District
- Ensure operational objectives are met through effective communication and implementation of District initiatives
- Enforce District policies, procedures, and performance standards
- Exercise direct, technical, and functional supervision of assigned staff
Requirements
- 7+ years of full-time suppression experience, including command/management experience
- 4+ years of full-time experience as a Fire Captain
- Possession of Fire Officer or Company Officer Certificate in accordance with California State Fire Training requirements
- Possession of a valid California driver license with a DMV Fire Endorsement
- Possess and maintain valid EMT certification
- Ability to complete Chief Fire Officer Certification within 3 years of appointment
Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or related field is highly desirable.
- Seven (7) years of progressively responsible full-time suppression experience including several years of command level and management experience (e.g. Battalion Chief / Division Chief or equivalent) and at least four (4) years of full-time experience as a Fire Captain.
