This role involves administrative and technical work, overseeing plans review, code compliance, and inspections for new and existing building constructions in New Haven.
Responsibilities
- Review building plans for compliance with applicable codes (plumbing, heating, AC, ventilation, sprinklers) and issue permits.
- Perform on-site inspections of residential and commercial building construction to ensure code compliance and verify construction aligns with approved plans.
- Investigate building code violations, complaints, and hazardous conditions, issue correction notices and 'stop work' orders.
- Interpret and provide information to contractors, builders, and the public on New Haven Uniform Building Code and related regulations.
- Review blueprints, plans, and sketches for permit applications, determine code conformance, and approve plans after corrections.
- Compile and submit monthly construction activity reports and maintain records of daily inspections and activities.
- Coordinate reviews with other City staff and departments as needed.
- Recommend issuance of building permits, certificates of occupancy, or certificates of completion.
- Perform administrative tasks such as answering correspondence, preparing periodic activity reports, and directing subordinate staff.
Requirements
- Certified State of Connecticut Assistant Building Official at time of application
- 3 years of building construction inspection or related experience
- Thorough knowledge of current residential and commercial construction techniques, materials, and practices
- Thorough knowledge of the Connecticut Basic Building Code and related City and Industry standards
- Familiarity with structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical inspections
- Ability to review and interpret plans and specifications
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Valid Driver’s License
