Represent state agencies in legal matters involving judicial review, enforcement proceedings, and challenges to agency rules and statutes. Independently manage a diverse litigation docket and provide legal advice and assistance to state agencies and the public.
Responsibilities
- Represent state agencies in state and federal district and appellate courts in matters involving judicial review of agency orders, enforcement proceedings, actions challenging agency rules and statutes, and non-party subpoenas
- May represent the Office of the Attorney General and state agencies in state district and appellate courts in open records litigation
- May serve as general counsel to state agencies
- Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda and discovery; participate in trial and appellate advocacy
- Perform legal research
- Coordinate, plan, and monitor legal activities
- Provide legal advice, counsel, and assistance
- Independently manage a diverse litigation docket with supervision
- Represent state agencies in administrative enforcement proceedings before the State Office of Administrative Hearings
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas
- Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas
- Experience in legal work
- Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings; and of state and federal laws, regulations, and rules relevant to administrative law
- Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis; in conducting investigations; in mediation and negotiations
- Ability to prepare legal documents, to conduct research, to interpret and apply laws, to summarize findings, to prepare cases for trial, to conduct hearings, and to communicate effectively
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D.
- Experience in legal work (entry level); 1-2 years of full-time attorney experience preferred for AAG II/III
Nice to Have
- One to five years civil litigation experience or equivalent, including appellate and brief-writing experience
- Experience in administrative law
- Experience interpreting and applying open records, open meetings, and other open government legislation
- Admitted to practice in Federal District Courts
