The After Camp Educator leads and supervises a group of up to 18 children in engaging, multi-age after-camp activities at the New York Botanical Garden. This role involves developing and leading hands-on science and nature games, exploring the garden grounds, and mentoring camp assistants.
Responsibilities
- Lead a group of up to 18 children in multi-age after-camp activities exploring the New York Botanical Garden grounds and outdoor classrooms
- Establish a fun and engaging environment for after-campers from Science Camp and Edible Academy Camp
- Develop and lead active, hands-on science and nature games and activities
- Collaborate with camp staff team to lead activities throughout the NYBG landscape
- Supervise and mentor 2 Camp Assistants on daily responsibilities and duties
- Assist Camp staff at Nature/Science Camp with activities/recess to get to know campers during their camp day
- Plan and coordinate daily and weekly after-camp program and schedule, including independently planning and implementing science/nature-based activities
- Support Explainers in helping campers with daily tasks, participating in activities, and escorting to the restroom
- Build strong relationships with Campers and Camp staff
- Supervise safe and orderly pick-up at end of After Camp
- Maintain close communication with Camp staff to mitigate behavioral and scheduling issues
Requirements
- Experience teaching outdoors with large groups of children with varied learning needs
- Experience with relevant student age groups (Pre-K to 8th grade)
- Background in science, education and/or museum studies
- Experience teaching hands-on, inquiry-based lessons with live plants and living organisms
- Outgoing and friendly personality with excellent oral communication skills
- Responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self-starter, and able to mentor others
- Commitment to orientation/training: June 22-July 2, 2026, 9am-5pm
- Commitment to leading 3-6 weeks of after camp: July 6-July 24, 2026 (Pre-K-6th grade) and/or August 3-August 21, 2026 (Pre-K-8th grade); 10am-6pm schedule
Qualifications
- Background in science, education and/or museum studies
- Experience teaching outdoors with large groups of children with varied learning needs and relevant student age group experience; experience teaching hands-on, inquiry-based lessons with live plants and living organisms.
